In Nagaland, a transformative project is underway, setting a precedent for rural development through sustainable energy solutions. The "Development of North East India through Solar Mini-Grids" initiative, a collaborative effort between the Government of Nagaland and the Mithun Rural Development Foundation (MRDF), is electrifying the remote villages of Mon District. It is an initiative promising not only to light up homes but also power economic and social growth. solar mini grid.png

A Bright Start

The project was officially set in motion when a 20-year agreement was signed to establish solar mini-grids across all 132 villages of Mon District. This ambitious initiative aims to cover the entire district within four years, providing reliable, round-the-clock access to electricity.

The first phase of implementation targets 15 villages, with subsequent phases aiming to bring the total up to all 132 villages. Each village will be equipped with a mini-grid generating a combined capacity of 4 MW, enough to power 50,000 tribal households and impact approximately 280,000 residents. This is a major step towards not just electrification, but also sustainable and low-carbon rural economic development.

Catalyzing Rural Transformation

Electricity is often taken for granted in urban locales, but in the rural expanses of Nagaland, it's a catalyst for transformation. The availability of consistent and green power means local health centres, schools, and public infrastructures like water supplies and streetlights can operate without interruption.

For instance, the newly inaugurated 25 kW solar mini-grid in Longkei village now supports local micro-enterprises and powers essential services, significantly improving the quality of life for its residents.

Economic Spark

By integrating Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) based solar mini-grids, MRDF is fostering the creation of micro-enterprises. This initiative not only meets local energy needs but also supports agri-processing and non-farm activities such as metal fabrication and banana ark handicrafts. The approach is expected to boost household incomes by 20% annually, thereby increasing the village GDP per capita significantly.

In an inspiring showcase of community support and social investment, 187 Rang De Social Investors have successfully facilitated the funding of seven loans, aggregating a total of Rs. ₹800,000.

These loans are specifically directed towards bolstering rural livelihoods through ventures in animal husbandry, rice mills and agro-products. This initiative not only empowers local entrepreneurs but also aligns seamlessly with the solar mini-grid projects in enhancing rural productivity.  borrowers.jpg

Through the Rang De loans, rural entrepreneurs are able to utilise the reliable electricity provided by the solar grids. They are able to operate and expand their businesses, creating a sustainable ecosystem of growth and development in their communities.

Enhancing Quality of Life

Quality of life in the Mon District is set for a dramatic improvement. Reliable electricity supply meets the aspirational needs of the local communities, supporting educational advancements through smart classrooms, and improving health outcomes by powering primary health centres.

The initial success in Mon District is just the beginning. With plans to expand the project to 1000 mini-grids across Northeast India, MRDF and its partners are looking to replicate this model, potentially transforming the entire region.  solar mini grid installation.jpg

The solar mini-grid project in Nagaland is more than just an infrastructure development initiative. It is a comprehensive community upliftment program that promises to bring modern amenities to remote areas, spur economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life.
