With the vision of transforming the socio-economic outcomes of small tea growers of the country, Grassroots Tea Corporation Private Limited (GTC) was incorporated in 2017 in New Delhi. In close collaboration with small tea growers, GTC operates at the aggregation, repacking, wholesale and retail of authentic tea. Currently there are about 250 Bodo farmers from the small tea grower collectives of Rwdwmsha, Rwdwmkhang, Swmkhwr Valley and Alupara from Assam who are associated with GTC. In GTC's model, subsistence tea farmers organise, in collectives, own and actively participate in the value-creating & value-sharing processes across the value chain: at cultivation, at manufacturing, and at the retail level. As a part of the long-term vision, GTC envisages to facilitate setting up more STG owned tea producer companies (TPC)-where the STGs are the shareholders - directly impacting a larger number of STG households and worker households across India. Rang De's credit intervention will help the TPCs to meet their working capital expenses and manage their credit cycle, making their businesses more efficient. It will enable them to pay the leaf supplying farmers immediately, who otherwise will be left with no option but to sell their produce to other agents for an unfair price.
